About Project Zani /

Project Zani revolves around hygiene promotion in three refugee camps situated in Tanzania. This project which is part of Sustainable Global Technologies (SGT) Studio course of Aalto University. The project is an initiative  for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees but does not reflect its official views.

In rapidly growing refugee camps where thousands of people live in close quarters such as the ones in Tanzania, ensuring a safe and healthy environment is a major challenge. The refugee camps have already suffered frequent outbreaks of  Malaria, Cholera and other waterborne diseases.

Through research, interviews and collaborative workshops with hygiene promotion officers,  we aim to explore new methodologies, ways to think and ways to perform hygiene promotion in refugee camps in the Kigoma region of Tanzania. Our package will aid the hygiene promoters of these camps, who can use it to develop and spread communication messages in order to facilitate behavioural change.

What ?

Creating positive behavior change among the refugees living in the three biggest refugee camps of Tanzania, in relation to hygiene practices.

For Who ?

The final beneficiaries of

the project are the refugees of the three refugee camps in focus. The refugee children are identified as specific final beneficiaries.

+

The direct beneficiaries are the NRC hygiene promoters and through them the camp teachers.

How ?

Creating an information package that

1. Introduces the hygiene promoters methods  they can use to create new promotion messages

2. Consists of methods for interactive and  collaborative promotion work with the final

beneficiaries (refugees).

Why ?

Because the hygiene

promotion in the refugee camps

is lacking the behavioral aspect currently

+

This project aims to "break the cycle of repetitive hygiene messages". The messages are not as effective as they should be due to the lack of variability on them.
